Top 100 Board Games of All Time: Analyzing Your Favorite Reviewers’ Top Games Lists [2019 Edition]

Is your shelf of shame ever growing? With thousands of new board games being released every year, it’s harder than ever to figure out which games to buy, which to play, and which to avoid. There’s simply too many games! Overwhelmed with choices, many of you may have turned to popular board game reviewers such as the Shut Up & Sit Down posse or Tom Vasel and his motley crew at The Dice Tower. But reviews have limitations and only help so much with the decision process. They don’t rank games, compare them to other potential candidates, or account for bias à la cult of the new. It’s no wonder that “top board game lists” have risen in popularity over the years among reviewers and content creators. They are helpful and simultaneously entertaining.

Although I love a top game list as much as the next gamer, I understand that they only represent an individual’s personal game tastes. I wanted to see what they may look like in aggregate. So, I compiled the lists from 20 of my favorite board game reviewers and combined them to see which games topped the charts. Let’s explore.

The remains of humanity took shelter in the ruins of cities and organized in small communities, gangs and armies. Conflicts between such groups are not uncommon and the reasons of such are numerous: territory, food or equipment. What is more, the ruined cities are constantly patrolled by machines sent from the north, where a vast cybernetic entity, called MOLOCH, appeared. Great wastelands that surround what was left of the greatest cities are home to another enemy – Borgo – a charismatic leader who controls an army of gruesome mutants. One of the last hopes of humanity is the OUTPOST, a perfectly organized army which wages a guerilla war against MOLOCH. Nevertheless, most human settlements, including the HEGEMONY, are not concerned with war until it comes banging at their door. Such is the world of Neuroshima.”

Bézier Games are designed to be modern classics, stand the test of time, be approachable for new gamers, and remain challenging for expert players.

Description: “In the tile-laying game Castles of Mad King Ludwig, players are tasked with building an amazing, extravagant castle for King Ludwig II of Bavaria…one room at a time. You see, the King loves castles, having built Neuschwanstein (the castle that inspired the Disney theme park castles) and others, but now he’s commissioned you to build the biggest, best castle ever — subject, of course, to his ever-changing whims. Each player acts as a building contractor who is adding rooms to the castle he’s building while also selling his services to other players.

In the game, each player starts with a simple foyer. One player takes on the role of the Master Builder, and that player sets prices for a set of rooms that can be purchased by the other players, with him getting to pick from the leftovers after the other players have paid him for their rooms. When a room is added to a castle, the player who built it gains castle points based on the size and type of room constructed, as well as bonus points based on the location of the room. When a room is completed, with all entranceways leading to other rooms in the castle, the player receives one of seven special rewards.

After each purchasing round, a new player becomes the Master Builder who sets prices for a new set of rooms. After several rounds, the game ends, then additional points are awarded for achieving bonus goals, having the most popular rooms, and being the most responsive to the King’s demands, which change each game. Whoever ends up with the most castle points wins.”

Description: “Welcome to the Rococo era during the reign of Louis XV when it’s safe to say that holding lavish balls is quite trendy. Important personalities wrap up in noble coats and dresses, anxious to outshine one another. As the biggest event is coming up in just a few weeks, everyone is turning to you with their requests: an elegant coat here, a stunning dress there, or a donation to fund the fireworks at the event. Soon you realize that it’s not just about your dressmaking business anymore – it’s about managing the most prestigous ball of the era…and now it’s time to ro(c)k! Rococo is a Eurostyle board game with an interesting take on deck-building. Each turn you play one of your employee cards and let that employee perform a task: hire a new employee, buy resources, manufacture a coat or dress, or invest in the ball’s decorations. But not every employee is up to every task, so you must choose and lead your employees wisely – especially since each employee grants a unique bonus and some of these bonuses generate prestige points. After seven rounds, the game ends with the big ball and a final scoring. Then you gain prestige points for certain employee bonuses and for coats and dresses that you rent out to guests at the ball as well as for decorations that you funded. The player who collected the most prestige points wins.”

47. Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King

Isle of Skye From Chieftain to King Board Game Strategy Game Fun Fast-Paced Tile Placement Game for Adults and Kids Ages 8+ 2-5 Players Average Playtime 30-50 Minutes Made by Lookout Games,MFG3509
  • BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPE: Immerse yourself in the beauty of the Isle of Skye, one of the most stunning places in the world, with soft sand beaches, rolling hills, and majestic mountains.
  • KINGDOM BUILDING: Compete to build your own kingdom on this captivating island, strategically placing tiles to maximize your points and secure your rule as the island's sovereign.
  • STRATEGIC CHALLENGE: Engage in a thrilling strategy game where thoughtful decisions and clever tile placement are key to success. Plan your moves carefully to outscore your opponents.
  • SOVEREIGN OF THE ISLAND: It's not about wealth, but about creating the best kingdom. In the end, the player with the most impressive realm becomes the true ruler of the Isle of Skye.
  • CAPTIVATING GAMEPLAY: Enjoy a game that combines stunning visuals with engaging mechanics, making Isle of Skye a must-have addition to your board game collection.

Description: “Isle of Skye, one of the most beautiful places in the world: Soft sand beaches, gently sloping hills, impressive mountains: the landscape of Isle of Skye is breathtaking and fascinates everyone. In this tile-laying game 2 to 5 players are the chieftains of 5 famous clans. The players try to build their little kingdoms to score as many points as possible. But in each game only 4 of the 16 scoring cards will be scored. Each game is different and leads to different tactics and strategies. To have enough money is useful in all games: In each turn the players can buy a tile from another player. The seller determines the price, but to do it wisely is the most interesting part of this game: A high price will lead to wealth, if someone buys this tile, but if there’s no buyer, the seller will lose the money spend on this tile. And in the end the player with the best kingdom will become the sovereign of the island, not the richest player! Isle of Skye is a gateway game for the whole family. With a playing time around 45 minutes, a huge variability and easy rules it’s a perfect game for all players. The awesome illustrations by Klemens Franz brings all the atmosphere of the Scottish island on your table.”

Win or lose, you are sure to enjoy the grand opening of Dungeon Petz.”

Make the right choices and your skills will reward you, revealing additional choices in your encounters and even the opportunity to draw one of the thirty Treasure cards. Play to your strengths and you could be handsomely rewarded!

In addition to facing encounters each turn, players also receive quests that ultimately contribute to their legend. As each game progresses, players acquire Story and Destiny points for completing quests and having successful encounters. The game ends when a player fulfills their destiny by reaching a combination of Story and Destiny points of their choosing. Even though that game may be over, all the players have tales to tell that will challenge, amuse, astound, and spellbind them for years to come.”

  • A new version of Kingsburg , a game of city-building and courtly influence for two to five players
  • Each player takes control of a border province preparing for invasion by monstrous forces
  • Use your dice to gain the favor of the King’s advisors and acquire the resources you need to improve your province
  • Features all the modules from the To Forge a Realm expansion for more variety in the buildings you construct and advisors you influence
  • The brand new Alternate Advisor Rewards module adds more options for developing your province

Description: “The realm of Kingsburg is under attack! Monstrous invaders are gathering at the borders, aiming to conquer the realm and plunder its riches. King Tritus has chosen you to take charge of a province on the border and prepare its defenses. Build your territory and earn your place on the Royal Council in Kingsburg, a game of city building and courtly intrigue. In Kingsburg, each player can develop their province as they see fit and this definitive edition provides as much variety as possible. Including the base game, all five modules from the To Forge a Realm expansion, as well as the new Alternate Advisor Rewards module, players have more options than ever before. Every year that passes sees your city grow, but danger is always lurking on the horizon. After winter’s harsh weather, an army invades. With goblins burning your settlements and dragons destroying a turn’s worth of victory points, you must find ways to protect your province. If you can impress the King with your political agility, he may reward you with a place at his side. You have just five years to rise above your counterparts and prove your worth!

Luckily, you aren’t entirely alone on the border. The King and his seventeen advisors are willing to aid you with resources, military intelligence, soldiers, or political clout. But each advisor is only willing to help one provincial governor per season, and they don’t often work well together. To gain their benefits, you must exert your influence over them using Kingburg’s innovative way of using dice: each player rolls their dice, then claims the resources bestowed by as many as three advisors, numbered 1-18. But since each advisor can only be used once per season, clever players will apply their dice rolls strategically in ways that simultaneously benefit themselves and vex their opponents, quickly snatching up advisors and cutting off their opponents, leaving them without resources and holding useless dice. Carefully apply your dice and scheme your way into the King’s inner circle!”

29. Twilight Struggle

Sale
GMT Games Twilight Struggle Deluxe Edition
  • Deluxe Edition
  • Relive the cold war and change history
  • Quick-playing, low-complexity
  • 2 players
  • Ages 14+

Description: “On November 9th of 2009, the world marked the 20th Anniversary of the conclusion of the Cold War. That was the day that the Cold War’s most tangible symbol — the Berlin Wall — was relegated to the ash heap of history. Unlike the 20th Century’s other great conflict, the Cold War did not end in an explosion of neutrons, but rather, an explosion of human freedom and optimism. We had avoided what many thought inevitable — the destruction of mankind through armed conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. Overnight, the face of Europe had changed. Suddenly, all things were possible. That was 20 years ago. Sadly, we all learned that the end of the Cold War was not “the end of history.” Mankind would find new ways to divide itself.

While the threat of nuclear holocaust disappeared, newer and more sinister forms of conflict would take its place. Where once superpowers bestrode the globe, decentralized networks and even individuals now command the world’s attention. This Deluxe Edition of Twilight Struggle seeks to capture the feeling of that earlier era.

Twilight Struggle is a two-player game simulating the forty-five year dance of intrigue, prestige, and occasional flares of warfare between the Soviet Union and the United States. Using the card-driven game mechanics pioneered in such award winning games as We the People and Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage, Twilight Struggle recreates the conflict between the most powerful nation states the world has ever known. The scope of the game covers the entire world as it was found in 1945. Players move units and exert influence in attempts to gain allies and control for their superpower.

As with GMT’s other card-driven games, decision-making is a challenge; how to best use one’s cards and units given consistently limited resources? Event cards add cover a vast array of historical happenings, from the Berlin Airlift, to the Vietnam War and the U.S. peace movement, to the Cuban Missile Crisis. This Deluxe Edition of Twilight Struggle marries world-class components, with the sort of world-class game play for which GMT is already known. We cannot think of a better way to commemorate this vital piece of world history. We invite you to relieve an era with the words uttered by one of its most iconic statesmen: “Now the trumpet summons us again, not as a call to bear arms, though arms we need; not as a call to battle, though embattled we are – but a call to bear the burden of a long twilight struggle” – John F. Kennedy”

23. Power Grid

Rio Grande Games Power Grid Deluxe
  • Standalone game
  • For 2-6 players
  • Takes about 2 hours to play
  • Deluxe version of the classic Power Grid game

Description: “Power Grid is the updated release of the Friedemann Friese crayon game Funkenschlag. The latest cooperative publishing effort from Friedemann Friese and Rio Grande Games, removes the crayon aspect from network building in the original edition while retaining the fluctuating commodities market like McMulti and an auction round intensity reminiscent of The Princes of Florence.

The object of Power Grid is to supply the most cities with power when someone’s network gains a predetermined size. In this new edition, players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then vie against other players to purchase the power plants that you use to supply the power. However, as plants are purchased, newer more efficient plants become available so you’re potentially allowing others to access to superior equipment merely by purchasing at all. Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials, like coal, oil, garbage, or uranium, to power said plants(except for the highly valuable ’renewable energy’ wind/solar plants), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.”

Sale
Agricola (Revised Edition) | Strategy Game | Farming Game for Adults and Teens | Advanced Board Game | Ages 12+ | 1-4 Players | Average Playtime 90 Minutes | Made by Lookout Games
  • FAMILY STRATEGY GAME: Agricola is the classic game that invites players to guide their families to wealth, health, and prosperity in Central Europe.
  • STRATEGIC CHOICES ABOUND: Every game challenges players to make unique strategic choices as they develop and expand their farms.
  • SOLO PLAY OPTION: Enjoy Agricola as a fun solo experience, immersing yourself in the world of farming and resource management.
  • FAMILY-FRIENDLY: For family play, you can opt to play without the cards, creating a more accessible and engaging experience for all ages.
  • IMMERSIVE CIVILIZATION: Enter a world revitalized after the Plague, where fields must be plowed, sowed, and harvested, and where upgrading wooden houses is key to success.

Description: “In Agricola (Latin for “farmer”), you’re a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you’ll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rug rats? Agricola is a turn based game. There are 14 game turns plus 6 harvest phases (after turn 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 14). Each player starts with two playing tokens (farmer and wife) and thus can take two actions per turn. There are multiple options, and while the game progresses, you’ll have more and more: first thing in a turn, a new action card is flipped over. Problem: Each action can be taken just once per turn, so it’s important to do some things with high preference. Each player also starts with a hand of 7 Occupation cards (of more than 160 total) and 7 Minor Improvement cards (of more than 140 total) that he may use during the game if they fit in his/her strategy. This amounts to countless strategies, some depending on your card hand. Sometimes it’s a good choice to stay on course, sometimes you better react on what your opponents do. Agricola can also be played without cards (family game) and can even be played solo. Designed by Uwe Rosenberg.”

When the third age is over, players score the points given by their cards and the military conflicts. The winner is the player with the most points.”

  • CLAIM THE GALACTIC THRONE: Chart your path to victory and strive to sit upon the coveted throne of Mecatol Rex as the master of the galaxy.

Description: “Mecatol Rex. The center of the known galaxy and seat of the former Lazax Empire. Scarred by the flames of betrayal, Rex is a specter of a fallen empire and of ages long forgotten, yet it remains an object of reverence— and desire—in a galaxy of conflict and uncertainty.

Once, the great city that spanned its surface was the pinnacle of civilization. Today, Mecatol City is naught but a blasted shell of its former glory, a grim respite in the toxic Sea of Desolation that covers the majority of the planet.

Even so, its parabolic history of decadence and destruction does little to deter those who would seek to harness its power. The Winaaran custodians who dwell within the remnants of the city maintain what is left of the former capital, waiting for one of the Great Races to step forward and take up the mantle of the former Emperors.

But who among the races of the galaxy could fill the void left by the Lazax? To lay claim to the throne is a destiny sought by many, yet the shadows of the past serve as a grim warning to those who would follow in their footsteps…

On each turn, players must decide whether to take good of one type or to carry out a building action.  The number of goods on offer varies from turn to turn. New goods of each kind are added regularly, building up until a player takes them. Wood, clay and iron are building resources. Fish, grain and cattle are used to feed your dock workers. Actions in buildings allow goods to be upgraded — just turn the tokens over to show the reverse side.  At the end of the game, the player with the largest fortune is the winner. This is the total of the player’s cash and the value of his or her ships and buildings.  Le Havre can be played by 1-5 players, either in a shortened version or as a full game, ensuring that it provides the right level of challenge for any game table.”

A Feast for Odin Board Game - Viking Saga of Wealth and Glory! Strategy Game, Family Game for Kids & Adults, Ages 14+, 1-4 Players, 30-120 Minute Playtime, Made by Feuerland
  • VIKING ADVENTURE: Command a Viking tribe in a quest for wealth, glory, and prosperity.
  • MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES: Engage in trading, hunting, raiding, and building houses in this epic strategy game.
  • FEAST IN ODIN'S NAME: Celebrate with a feast every round as you make your mark on history.
  • DIVERSE ACTIONS: Enjoy a wide variety of actions and occupation cards for endless replayability.
  • 2-PLAYER OPTION: Now includes an alternate game board for 2 players and bonus content from mini-expansions.

Description: “In this epic game, command a band of Vikings to trade, hunt, raid, pillage, and plunder in search of wealth and glory for your tribe. A Feast for Odin is a saga in the form of a board game, from acclaimed designer Uwe Rosenberg. In this strategic worker placement game for one to four players, you will experience the Viking way of life. Each player explores new territories—and raids the villages they find there—to increase their wealth and glory, while also taking part in day-to-day activities such as gathering food to feed their band of hungry Vikings. In the end, the player whose possessions carry the greatest value is the winner.

Delve into the land of Vikings as you determine which tasks your band will perform. Send some of your Vikings to produce goods such as wool, spices, and silver, then send others to trade these goods for more valuable resources. Or send a ship to explore new lands, adding more boards—and even more options—to your home board. Your goal is to fill your home board with a horde of goods collected from the activities chosen. The goods tiles come in different sizes, however, so make sure you can find room for them on your board. By placing tiles strategically, you can cover spaces that reduce your final score and raise your income to increase your wealth.

The heartiest Viking can’t perform raids or produce goods on an empty stomach. You’ll want to make sure they have enough food for their feast at the end of each round. From simple beans to hearty plates of meat, your Vikings must be well-fed or you must take a penalty. In A Feast for Odin, you must strike a balance between accumulating wealth through raids and providing for your tribe’s basic necessities. The Viking chieftain who can best maintain this balance will emerge victorious.

Blending worker and tile-placement game elements with intriguing puzzle aspects, A Feast for Odin provides an unforgettable experience. With an entire action board’s worth of possibilities each round, every new game presents unique challenges, opportunities, and paths to victory. Take command of your Vikings, sail into the unknown, and write your own saga in A Feast for Odin!”

Notes about Data and Methodology

The aggregated lists contained a total of 667 unique board games. The ranking methodology was relatively simplistic in nature. Games were ranked first based upon frequency, and then based on average rankings.

There are some limitations to this data. For instance, several of the lists are slightly outdated, others were unranked, and some were inferences based on ratings on BoardGameGeek.

Lists that were unranked were given identical rankings. All of Quinns’ were ranked 1, all of Rahdo’s were ranked 1, and JonGetsGames were either ranked 1 or 2.

Sometimes reviewer listed groups of games. For instance, Tom Vasel included an entire genre of game, escape rooms, in his top 10 list. I determined that some of these games were similar enough to warrant grouping. Games that were grouped, include Pandemic: Legacy, any escape room games, any games where a specific edition was specified (no one mentioned an older edition of game where there was one available), and any games where an expansion was specified.

  1. Forgive me for saying this, but why the ***k isn’t Viticulture ANYWHERE on this list? Very, very shameful omission to the point where you should be brought up on criminal charges!

    • I’m currently updating the list and will day this, it’s definitely ending up on there 🙂 That being said, personally it was a game I used to enjoy but no longer do. I find the cards to be random and have too much influence on the game.
